This is a poem about family members believing in each other and being proud about their accomplishments. I wrote it for my brother Heath for his senior year Utah High School Swimming State Championships. A few months later, however, the meaning in this poem really hit home and became even more emotional then ever as my brother lost his best friend in a snowmobile accident while on their prom night date. Heath found his friend Ryan lifeless and not breathing laying in the snow, his date was in and out of consciousness but alive. Heath had to do CPR on his friend while waiting for help to arrive. Ryan didn't make it and we all miss him deeply.
What makes this poem so meaningful is how my brother was such a strong person, brother, and friend to all those who loved Ryan during that difficult time. Heath rarely showed emotion or cried until the final goodbye at Ryan's burial. Heath is truly a hero in the eyes of his family!!!
IN THE EYES
IN THE EYES OF A BOY
A DREAM BEGINS
IT'S THE WILL INSIDE
THAT WANTS TO WIN
IN THE EYES OF A YOUNG MAN
HIS FATHER BOWED
"JUST DO WHAT YOU CAN
AND I'LL BE PROUD"
IN THE EYES OF A MAN
A MEMORY FADES
IT'S THE PAST OF A HERO
THAT NO ONE TRADES
IN THE EYES OF THE WORLD
HE MIGHT BE SMALL
BUT IN THE EYES OF HIS FAMILY
HE'S THE GREATEST OF ALL

Versao em Portugues
Nos Olhos
Nos olhos de um menino
Um sonho começa
é a verdade por dentro
Que sempre conquista
Nos olhos de um rapaz
Seu pai elogia
"Só faça o que puder,
que nada me envergonharia"
Nos olhos de um homem
Uma vaga memória
é o passado de um herói
Que ninguem troca
Nos olhos do mundo
Ele pode ser pequeno
Mas nos olhos de sua família
Ele é maior do que tudo
